Lymphedema Management
Lymphedema is abnormal swelling due to accumulation of protein rich fluid in interstitial space.
It is caused by damage or blockage of lymphatic system.
There are 2 types of lymphedema: Primary and Secondary.
Primary lymphedema is hereditary lymphedema where damage to the lymphatic system is present at birth.
Secondary lymphedema is most common type of lymphedema and caused by injury/damage to lymphatic system. The risk of developing lymphedema increased with:
- Surgery that removes or damages lymph nodes
- Radiation therapy
- Scar tissue from radiation therapy surgery
- Overweight
- Having an infection after surgery
- Please consult your healthcare provider if you are experiencing:
- Feeling heaviness in your affected limb
- Swelling near the area affected by surgery/cancer
- Reduced range of motion of the affected limb
- Thickening or hardening of skin
Treatment:
The gold standard treatment for lymphedema is complete decongestive treatment.
It includes:
manual lymphatic drainage – a gentle skin stretching technique that stimulates the lymphatic system.
compression therapy – multilayered bandaging or specially fitted garment that support the area to control swelling.
skin/nail care – skin care is important defense to lower risk of developing infections such as cellulitis.
exercises – with compression, exercise helps to improve lymphatic flow at the affected area.
education – information and advices on self management.
